Dar al-Ifta’ al-Masriyya (The Egyptian House of Religious Edicts) was created in 1895, and since then has functioned under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice. The organization has a consultancy role in the judicial system and is headed by the Grand Mufti, Sheikh Dr.Shawki 'Allam. Dar Al-Ifta’ receives inquiries from all over the world seeking clarification on the application of the Qur’an and the Sunna to everyday life. In response to these inquiries the institution issues thousands of religious edicts (fatwa) every month. Scholars at the Dar al-Ifta’ draw upon the Qur’an and Prophetic literature, and consult the opinions of Islamic jurists throughout history to provide Muslims with considered and informed answers to their questions. The institution also receives students for expert training in Islamic law.
