With a Foreword by DR UMAR FARUQ ABD-ALLAH This short essay by Abdal Hakim Murad, one of leading Muslim intellectuals in the West, is a concise and rich theological statement exploring the dynamic possibilities of an authentically Islamic universality for our age. Whereas modern globalism tends to annihilate cultural diversity, authentic Islamic pluralism, as exemplified in the theological implications of dhimma, offers to each community the opportunity to develop its own sacred space and express its own uniqueness. June 2010
In this paper the necessity and importance of Islam’s serious engagement with Modern Science is explored. The author argues that there are serious issues of contention between Modern Science and Islam, ranging from conceptual bases (‘methodological naturalism’) to the challenging worldview that has emerged from Science (e.g. Evolution and Big-bang/Multiverse Cosmology), and issues of application of science (genetic engineering, beginning and end of life issues, abuse of nature and the environment, etc.). This important paper charts some of the critical questions that need to be grappled with by Muslim theologians and which can no longer be postponed, yet alone ignored. February 2011 |
